NEX Report for October 22, 2007

[Correction Notice: In the original version of this entry, I made an arithmetical error that gave an incorrect change in the BBCI. From now on, I'll use a calculator more rigourously. Apologies to anyone who was misled.]
On Monday, the Barrel's Bottom Composite Index for the NEX closed at 87.84, down 0.90 points or 1.01% from its previous close of 88.74. The first minute of trading saw a slump, as Biomerge Industries Ltd. [NEX: BIL.H] opened down 0.5 cents/share from yesterday's close, Rocher Deboule Minerals Corp. [NEX: RD.H] opened down 2 cents/share, and Tapestry Resources [NEX: TPR.H] opened with a 2 cent/share decline. Not all stocks declined during that time: ITI World Investment Group Inc. class 'A' [NEX: IWI.H] opened up with a 4 cent/share gain, and International LMM Ventures Corp. [NEX: LMM.H] opened up 1 cent/share higher than its previous close. All of these gainers and decliners, plus ones that opened unchanged, left the BBC Index down more than a quarter of a point in the first minute of trading.

The decline continued until somewhat after 10 AM ET. A 2 cent/share opening drop in HLD Land Development Limited Partnership [NEX: HLD.UN.H] at about 9:44 AM ET was followed by another 2.5 cent/share drop in its price two minutes later; the latter drop put the index below 88.4. A 1 cent/share opening drop in eReservation Systems Corp. [NEX: RSS.H] pushed the BBCI down a little more as of 10:03 AM ET.

Two minutes afterwards, a 1 cent/share interday jump in Biomerge, to 2.5 cents/share, put the BBCI up above 88.9. A 0.5 cent/share drop in the same Biomerge, as of 10:40 AM ET, put the index back to just above 88.6. Other stocks began moving into the fore, such as The Silver Recycling Company Inc. [NEX: TSR.H] as of about ten minutes later with an opening gain of 14 cents/share. This leap, plus an additional 3.5 cent/share jump in TSR.H less than three minutes later, put the BBCI up above 88.9 again by 10:52 AM ET. It hovered between 88.9 and 88.98 until 1:17 PM ET.

The slump that started at that point in time took a relatively swift course; it ended, after a one-minute secondary upwards reaction, with a thud that took the index down to below 88.1 at 1:32 PM ET. A 10 cent/share opening decline in Maximum Ventures Inc. [NEX: MVI.H], on its first and last trade of the day, was enough to drag the index down more than seven-tenths of a point. The 88 level was broken through on the downside by 1:54 PM ET, where it stayed for the rest of the day. From that point, though, the decline was relatively slow. 87.9 wasn't breached until 2:50 PM, and the level at which it settled at that minute was slightly below the closing value of 87.84.

Here are the hourly values for the Barrel's Bottom Composite Index, rounded to the nearest hundredth of a point:
  • 10 AM ET: 88.39
  • 11 AM ET: 88.93
  • 12 PM ET: 88.96
  • 1 PM ET: 88.97
  • 2 PM ET: 87.99
  • 3 PM ET: 87.84
  • 4 PM ET/Close: 87.84 [slightly higher that 3 PM's value, but equalized due to rounding off.]

This is the first part of the daily NEX report. The second part covers NEX stocks that have sent out news releases during October 22nd and the third part covers NEX stocks of note for that day.
